How it started

We lived the lessons. Then we built the method.

We met through basketball. Visionary Mentoring was founded by a group of friends who saw what the game gave us, and knew the lessons were never really about basketball. Discipline. Resilience. How to lose on Saturday and turn up on Monday.
They carried us into very different careers. Medicine, engineering, law, professional sport. But we’d each earned them the long way, in different walks of life, without ever having a shared language to name them or work on them on purpose.
So we built the shared language ourselves. We came together and turned what we knew into something a young person could pick up easily, open up about, and actually use. That became our curriculum, and it’s what we take into schools.

Becoming a visionary means more than just dreaming. It means gaining the ability to imagine, plan, and build the future with creativity and ambition.

Three things we won’t compromise on

The goals belong to them

We don’t tell a young person what to want. We give them the space and structure to work that out for themselves, and we’re honest about what it will cost to get there.

Structure beats inspiration

Anyone can give a young person a good afternoon. We’d rather give them something they keep: a workbook, a mentor who comes back, a method that’s theirs. Inspiration fades. A method sticks.

The mentor we’d have wanted

We built this company on one question: what would we have wanted at fourteen? That sets the bar for who mentors. Our mentors have been where these young people are, they’re properly trained, and a young person will actually listen to them.

Who we are

The team

Dr Elton Chawatama

Co-Founder & Head of Partnerships
A GP with a Sports and Exercise Medicine background, and our Designated Safeguarding Lead. He trained at UCL Medical School, holds a Master’s in Sports and Exercise Medicine and has completed a PGCert in Medical Education at Cambridge. Elton brings this unique blend of academic success, understanding of education and performance to Visionary Mentoring.

Rotimi Keshinro

Co-Founder & Finance and Operations
An Aerosystems Engineer Officer in the Royal Air Force, with an engineering degree from Lancaster and a real drive to get young people into STEM. He plays for the RAF men’s senior team and coaches their under-23s, and he brings that same structure and discipline to how Visionary runs.

Raphell Thomas-Edwards

Co-Founder
A former Bristol Flyers club captain who played NCAA Division 1 basketball at Buffalo before finishing his degree at Gannon University. He founded and ran A&K Training, a basketball training company in Pennsylvania. At Visionary he is a true all-rounder, across operations, content, curriculum development and editing.

Marcus Delpeche

Co-Founder & Bristol Programme Lead
A professional forward in the Super League with the Bristol Flyers, playing at the top of the British game while qualifying as a solicitor. He holds a degree from Bates College, has done postgraduate study at UWE and Sheffield, and earned Commendation honours in his GDL at Manchester Met. Off the court he leads our business development and operations.

Corey Samuels

Director of Programmes
A former professional player for the Bristol Flyers, who came up through the club’s academy to the senior men’s team over twenty years in the game, alongside a First-Class degree in Business and HR Management. Corey has done it against the odds, and embodies what it means to be a Visionary. Having worked on both sides of the classroom, in student and staff-facing roles, he leads on curriculum and the business side of our programmes.

Malcolm Delpeche

Head of Marketing & Programme Lead
A professional centre known for his defence, and a former NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year during his time at Bates College. He has built a long career in the British game, with Newcastle Eagles and now Caledonia Gladiators, where he won the SLB Trophy in 2024/25. Marcus’s twin, he leads our marketing and heads up delivery in Scotland.
The organisation

A growing social enterprise

Visionary Mentoring started in Leicester and has grown out across the Bristol area and beyond, working with a range of schools and partners along the way. Every programme we run teaches us something new about what young people respond to, and we keep developing it to be more effective and more useful to them.
We would always welcome a conversation with schools, clubs and organisations who want to work with us, or to fund a programme for young people who could not otherwise access one.
